Message for Active Duty Armed Forces and Coast Guard
Often locally stationed Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard Members are not legal residents of Florida and do not have a Florida Driver's License. But, because you live and work here, you may receive a traffic ticket in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, or another Florida county.
You already know you are responsible to pay these local civil fines. What you may not be aware of is that traffic points earned here in Florida often effect your Driver's record in your home state and your auto insurance rates. The State of Florida has reciprocal agreements with most of the other states. They share information with them and all major insurance companies.
Consequently, points earned here will be reported against your driving record and to your insurance company.
What does that mean to you? If you just pay the traffic fine, you will be adjudicated "Guilty" by the court and earn the points in Florida. When reported to your insurance company, they will use that information to raise your rates.
To avoid expensive auto insurance rate increases, it is in your interest to attend an approved Florida Traffic Safety class. Why? When you pay your ticket, you will receive up to an 18% discount on the fine and no points are earned. No points should keep your insurance rates from increasing 10%, 15% or 20% due to this violation.
